The working table of laser cutting, engraving and marking equipment is a key component to support workpieces and discharge smoke and cutting debris. Aluminum honeycomb has long dominated this market for its rigidity. However, it suffers from heavy weight, high cost, electrical conductivity which may cause sparks, and complicated processing, which are persistent pain points for equipment manufacturers.
As a new type of sandwich core material, PC (polycarbonate) honeycomb core can be directly used as the base material of laser machine working tables. It maintains the function of smoke and debris extraction, and becomes a highly competitive substitute for aluminum honeycomb for medium and low-power laser equipment.
Same Core Function: Efficient Smoke & Debris Discharge
A large amount of smoke, fumes and molten scraps are generated during laser processing. The working table requires regular channels for downward negative-pressure air extraction to remove fumes. This prevents smoke from contaminating lenses and workpieces, ensuring cutting precision and good finished quality.
PC honeycomb core features continuous straight hexagonal channels for smooth airflow without clogging. Honeycomb holes run vertically through the panel, allowing scraps to fall directly into the dust collection box. Like aluminum honeycomb, it delivers uniform negative pressure extraction to fulfill smoke and waste removal requirements.
The transparent or black PC honeycomb has smooth hole walls, so molten slag hardly adheres to the surface. It is simple to clean and requires low maintenance.
PC Honeycomb Core VS Aluminum Honeycomb: Key Advantages
1. Cost Advantage, Lower Material Expense
Aluminum honeycomb has high raw material, cutting and post-processing costs. PC honeycomb core has lower raw material cost. Mass production further reduces the price of finished panels compared with aluminum honeycomb.
When laser equipment manufacturers purchase in bulk, they can cut material cost of worktables, reduce overall machine expenditure and strengthen price competitiveness. It is especially suitable for mass matching of medium & low-power laser engravers and small laser cutting machines.
2. Greatly Reduced Weight for Equipment Lightweighting
PC has much lower density than aluminum. For panels with identical thickness and dimensions, PC honeycomb core weighs only about 1/3 of aluminum honeycomb.
Lighter worktables bring multiple benefits: lower overall machine weight for easier handling and container shipment, cutting ocean freight cost; less load on the machine frame, simplifying frame structural design and saving frame materials. The weight reduction effect is prominent for desktop and portable laser machines.
3. Electrical Insulation to Avoid Spark Risk
Aluminum is an excellent electrical conductor. During laser processing, contact between workpieces and aluminum honeycomb table may cause conduction and sparks, even short-circuit risks, especially when cutting non-metal sheets.
Polycarbonate (PC) is a good electrical insulator. PC honeycomb eliminates spark hazards on the table, offering higher safety for processing acrylic, wood, MDF, leather, fabric, cardboard, foam and other non-metallic materials.
Note: Aluminum honeycomb is still preferred for high-power thick metal cutting. PC honeycomb is optimized for non-metal laser processing.
4. Corrosion Resistance & Stable Service Life
In long-term service under smoke, high-temperature flue gas and dust, aluminum honeycomb is prone to surface oxidation and scale buildup. It may develop aluminum rust in humid environments, blocking airflow channels and reducing extraction efficiency.
PC honeycomb resists moisture and weak acid/alkaline flue gas corrosion and will never rust. Its honeycomb channels stay unclogged for long-term use, suitable for machines exported to humid workshops or rainy overseas regions.
5. Easy Machining to Cut Secondary Processing Time
PC honeycomb panel can be cut simply by regular sawing or CNC without special cutting tools. It can be drilled and grooved as required. Cutting aluminum honeycomb generates aluminum chips and sharp burrs, requiring extra grinding and deburring procedures. PC honeycomb produces few burrs after cutting for faster assembly and lower labor cost in factories.
Application Boundaries: Suitable & Unsuitable Scenarios
✅ Recommended for PC Honeycomb Core
Medium & low power laser engravers, desktop laser cutting machines
Processing non-metals: acrylic, wood, MDF, leather, fabric, cardboard, foam
Export small laser machines where lightweight and sea freight control are required
Equipment manufacturers aiming to reduce worktable material costs
❌ Not Recommended
High-power fiber laser cutting for thick metal (hot molten metal slag will burn PC material)
Heavy-duty industrial laser platforms requiring ultra-high load capacity and high-temperature resistance
Conclusion
Aluminum honeycomb is a mature solution for heavy-duty laser worktables. For non-metal laser processing equipment, PC honeycomb core meets core requirements of smoke extraction and waste removal while bringing multiple benefits: lower purchasing cost, lighter weight, spark-free insulation, corrosion resistance and easy machining.
For overseas laser equipment manufacturers, PC honeycomb core is a differentiated material selection to control cost, reduce machine weight and boost competitiveness in global markets.
